Founded on 19 November 1882, La Plata is the capital of the province of Buenos Aires, situated 56 km from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. Architecture, gastronomy, museums, shopping, outdoor activities, culture and events – La Plata has it all.

It is also known as the ‘City of Diagonals’, the ‘City of Linden Trees’ and the ‘City of Students’ due to its large number of public and private universities and further education colleges. Furthermore, as the provincial capital, it is home to professional bodies and, of course, government agencies.

La Plata is a global benchmark for its urban planning, where the “Perfect Square” features 23 parks and squares, boasts a wide variety of tree species that adorn the streets, and as you move away from the centre, you can hear the song of starlings, woodpeckers, ovenbirds, parakeets and thrushes.

The city is also known for being innovative in many aspects: it was the first city to have traffic lights and public electric lighting; by 1887, telegraph and telephone services had already been launched, and by 1892 the first electric tram route was operational, making it the first city in South America to have this form of public transport.
