Post-Conference Fieldtrip | The Neuquén Basin
Located in the northern Patagonian Andes of Argentina, Neuquén Province is renowned for its remarkable diversity of landscapes, including snow-capped volcanoes, ancient forests, crystal-clear lakes, rivers, mountains, and vast steppe.
Rich in Mapuche cultural heritage and internationally recognized for its exceptional paleontological record, the province offers outstanding opportunities for nature-based tourism, outdoor recreation, winter sports, and scientific discovery.
We propose a tour of the province, visiting museums that house some of the world’s largest dinosaurs, exploring a unique Araucaria forest on the slopes of Copahue Volcano, and tracing the geological history of the Neuquén Basin through its outstanding rock outcrops. We will explore Early Jurassic marine strata; the Vaca Muerta Formation, a Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous marine unit that constitutes a world-class source rock and major unconventional hydrocarbon reservoir; and the Jagüel Formation, a marine calcareous succession spanning the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary.
