The Observatory and the Campus

The Observatorio Astronómico de La Plata was founded in the late 19th century, shortly before the establishment of the city itself. The observatory complex preserves several historic buildings and telescopes and remains one of the most distinctive scientific landmarks of La Plata.

The campus is located within El Bosque, the city’s main park, which also hosts the renowned Museo de La Plata.

The City of La Plata

La Plata is the capital city of the Buenos Aires Province, located approximately 60 km from Buenos Aires.

The city is internationally known for its unique urban design. Carefully planned, its central district follows a precise geometric layout forming a perfect square crossed by diagonal avenues running northeast–southwest and northwest–southeast. Numerous parks and green spaces are distributed regularly throughout the city.

Along the main civic axis stand several notable architectural landmarks, including: the neo-Gothic Catedral de La Plata, the brutalist Teatro Argentino de La Plata, the historic Pasaje Dardo Rocha, the City Hall of the city , and the iconic Casa Curutchet, the only building in Latin America designed by Le Corbusier, among others.

The city’s tourism office also offers guided walking tours of the main landmarks: https://turismo.laplata.gob.ar/walking-tours.html
