ASTRAL-X: IAU/COSPAR X-ray Astronomy School

The ASTRAL-X School is a unique opportunity for students and early-career researchers from Latin America to dive deep into the multidimensional aspects of X-ray astrophysics. Participants will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge instruments and techniques shaping the future of research areas, from stellar compact objects and supernova remnants to active galactic nuclei and galaxy clusters. We will explore high-resolution spectra with the XRISM mission, delve into advanced timing studies using the NICER instrument, and study X-ray polarimetry with the IXPE satellite. We will also feature insightful lectures on the NuSTAR hard X-ray observatory, and the integration of Machine Learning tools to enhance data analysis techniques. In addition, participants will benefit from comprehensive theoretical lectures covering essential topics such as X-ray astrophysics, high-energy radiative processes, and statistics, offered by internationally recognised, experienced Lecturers in the field.

What's new?

June 5: ASTRAL-X School officially announced! 🙂  Registration/Application is now open!

The City and the National University of La Plata, Argentina

Founded in 1882 as the capital of Buenos Aires Province, the city of La Plata is known for its unique urban design and strong academic tradition. Conceived as a model city under the ideals of the City Beautiful and Rationalist movements, its layout features a striking grid intersected by diagonal avenues that converge at the central plaza. The city is characterised by tree-lined boulevards, green public squares every few blocks, and a rich architectural heritage.

La Plata is also home to the prestigious National University of La Plata (UNLP), one of Argentina’s leading research institutions and the host of this ASTRAL-X X-ray Astronomy School, which will be held in the Karakachoff Building, alongside the UNLP Headquarters. The University plays a central role in the city’s identity, fostering scientific and cultural life in a setting where history, innovation, and civic design come together. Participants will have the opportunity to experience this vibrant academic environment while enjoying the charm and legacy of a city deeply rooted in science and education.

Targeted Participants for the School

The School will host 32 participants from Latin America. Targeted participants are mainly PhD students, advanced Master’s (or Licenciatura) students and Postdocs, as well as early-career researchers or young staff members.

Non-local participants will be fully accommodated at the AMAU Hotel, at no cost. Meals will be fully covered for all the selected participants. Travel expenses will only be partially covered in particular cases, after a Financial Support form is filled out together with the Registration/Application (subject to approval).
